Set within 52 acres of picturesque countryside and breath-taking views of the Downs, Wickham House is a magnificent, exclusive-use venue, perfect for an English country wedding.
When I visited the impressive Georgian Manor House, I was immediately drawn to the Gothic architecture and beautifully landscaped gardens. Unlike many other wedding venues, Wickham House is first and foremost a beloved family home. Philippa and James D’arcy have worked extremely hard to create an intimate, relaxed and idyllic setting for couples. Walking around the inside of the stunning manor I could really see the effort and personal touch that has gone into making this a fabulous wedding venue.
One of the most unique elements to Wickham House is the quaint 12th Century St Swithun’s Chapel, situated directly next to the Main House. Although church services are open to the public, it is mainly used for Sunday service and is most likely to be available for your religious ceremony. The church itself can seat up to 200 guests. I did enjoy the rather quirky addition to the interior which come in the form of papier-mâché elephants. Yes elephants! Several rather beautiful elephant busts that were acquired in Paris in 1862 are located in the north aisle of the charming church.
The Barn is a fantastic new space that can hold 125 for a civil ceremony or create a cosy reception setting for 80 guests. With kitchen and shower facilities along with an open log fire, The Barn can also be used as a bridal changing suite as well as a relaxing, chill-out space for couples on their wedding day. If you arrange with the venue beforehand, The Barn can also be used for an intimate rehearsal or family dinner space the evening before the wedding.
The Walled Garden provides an idyllic setting for an outdoor wedding ceremony and comfortably seats up to 180 guests. Surrounded by the luscious flora and fauna (and a very inviting swimming pool) you can just visualise sipping summer cocktails and feasting on yummy canapés at your drinks reception. I spent quite a lot of time wandering around the twisting paths as well as discovering the little ‘Snug’ located on the right-hand side of the garden.
The lush greenery and impressive oak trees surrounding Wickham House is the perfect space for reception marquee. As Wickham House do not have a fixed structure you have the ability of creating your own bespoke marquee overlooking the sprawling countryside. Choose from a variety of experienced marquee suppliers including Raj Tent Club who offer an exotic range of luxurious Indian tents or PBI Event Architecture who provide glass, steel and wood structures. Parking would never be a problem as you also have a designated car park which can hold up to 250 cars.
You can of course take full advantage of the luxurious decor in the The Main House for your photographs, I spent quite some time taking in the wonderful artwork and antiques. The grand staircase is perfect for that statement bridal shot. Each room is exquisitely decorated, The Library was my personal favourite, filled with a fantastic selection of leather-bound books and a rather impressive gothic, stone alcove. The Main House also offers two charming guest rooms which can be used for on the day wedding prep.I spent quite some time taking in the wonderful artwork and antiques.
